Michael New, Princeton Head Coach

A veteran of the Ivy League wars, head coach Mike New has been given the responsibility of turning around the wrestling program at Princeton University.

New graduated from Cornell University in 1992 after a successful career in the middle- weights. An All-Ivy selection as a senior at 167 pounds, New dropped to 158 pounds and was an Eastern finalist. These were a few of the numerous honors he received during his wrestling career in the Empire State, where he also dominated in the high school ranks at Canastota High School. New placed third as a senior in the state finals at 155 pounds.

Now his focus is shifted to Old Nassau, where he attacks the daunting task of building a wrestling powerhouse from scratch with the same verve and energy that he once attacked overmatched opponents. And he is attacking that task one wrestler at a time.

"I'm here to teach and have the wrestlers learn their own style, one that works for them," New says. "There are many different ways to wrestle. You have to figure out how it works for you. When you do that, you can raise the expectations for yourself."

New has done that for himself as well as his wrestlers. After one year as an assistant coach at Cornell and another at Princeton, New is entering his fourth year at the helm. With veteran leadership, dedicated younger wrestlers and a talented set of recruits, New has set the expectations at Princeton higher than they have been in quite some time.

"This is going to be a year that we could potentially have a breakthrough." New says. "We have some key wrestlers returning to the lineup, plus the return of Bonfiglio and Venturi as well as some great new talent."
