SCHURKAMP AND NOLAN ADVANCE TO QUARTERFINALS
Cedar Rapids, Iowa—- San Francisco State University Gator wrestlers Curtis Schurkamp (Jr, Escalon, Calif/Cal State Fullerton) and Josh Nolan (Fr, Quincy, Calif) each advanced to the quarterfinals of their respective weight class at the 2008 NCAA Division II National Wrestling Championships this morning in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Schurkamp won his first round match by a 7-4 decision over West Liberty State’s Lucas Hoffman. The junior 125 lb. now will wrestle Nebraska-Omaha’s Cody Garcia in the quarterfinals this evening, which begin at 6pm central time. Garcia won his first round match by fall at 1:09 over Cody Pierson (Carson-Newman).
Nolan won his first round match by a 10-8 decision over the third-ranked Brian Pogel of Mercyhurst. The freshman 149 lb. will now wrestle Central Oklahoma’s Colby Robinson, who won by a 9-4 decision over Upper Iowa’s Monterrious Adams, in the quarterfinals.
Alecxis Lara (Sr, Gilroy, Calif/Skyline College) lost his first round match at 184 lb. by a 10-0 major decision to St. Cloud State’s Brad Padgett. Lara will now wrestle Central Missouri State’s Jeremy Hudson (who lost 10-1 to Pittsburgh-Johnstown’s Mike Corcetti) in the consolation first round.
Steve Franklin (So, Middletown, Calif/Santa Rosa Junior College) lost his first round match by a 3-1 decision to Limestone’s William Moss. Franklin will now wrestle Carson-Newman’s Thomas Minwell, who lost by fall at 4:13 to Minnesota State-Mankato’s Brady Wilson, in the consolation first rounds this evening.
