Schurkamp To Become 51st All-American Under the Guidance Of Head Coach Lars Jensen

Cedar Rapids, Iowa—- San Francisco State University Gator wrestlers Curtis Schurkamp (Jr, Escalon, Calif/Cal State Fullerton) is still alive at the 2008 NCAA Division II National Wrestling Championships at the US Cellular Arena in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The junior 125 lb. wrestler won his match by a 7-4 decision over West Liberty State’s Lucas Hoffman.
He then lost by fall at 1:40 in the quarterfinals to Nebraska-Omaha’s Cody Garcia. Schurkamp (20-13) rebounded with a 7-3 victory by decision over North Carolina-Pembroke’s Joseph Mavins in the consolation second round. The Escalon native will become the 51st Gator to earn All-American status during SF State Head Coach Lars Jensen’s tenure. He is guaranteed to finish no lower than eighth and can finish as high as third place tomorrow in Day Two of the NCAA Division II National Wrestling Championships. Schurkamp will wrestle Chas Welch of Northern State in the third round of the consolations beginning at 10am central time.
Josh Nolan (Fr, Quincy, Calif) finished his first season as a Gator going 1-2 in the 149 lb. weight class at Nationals to finish 16-20 this season. He won his first round match by a 10-8 decision over the third-ranked Brian Pogel of Mercyhurst. The freshman then lost in the quarterfinals by fall at 4:34 to Central Oklahoma’s Colby Robinson. Nolan was eliminated by Zack McKendree of Gannon in the second round of the consolations by a 21-4 technical fall decision.
Alecxis Lara (Sr, Gilroy, Calif/Skyline College) went 0-2 in the 184 lb. weight class to finish his season with a 7-14 record. In his first round match, he lost by a 10-0 major decision to St. Cloud State’s Brad Padgett. Lara then lost to Central Missouri State’s Jeremy Hudson by a 11-6 decision in the first round of consolations.
Steve Franklin (So, Middletown, Calif/Santa Rosa Junior College) went 1-2 in the 285 lb. weight class. He lost his first round match by a 3-1 decision to Limestone’s William Moss. In the consolation first round, Franklin defeated Carson-Newman’s Thomas Minwell by a 13-2 major decision. Franklin (26-16) then was eliminated by Jesse Laber of the University of Mary by fall at 1:53 in the second round of the consolations.
As a team, the Gators are tied for 22nd with Gannon University with seven points while Minnesota State-Mankato leads after Day One with 66.5 points.
