December 10, 2007 by Coach Jeff | Category: NewsWest Valley finished the season with an 8th place finish at the Community College State Championships in Fresno this past weekend. The Vikings scored 50.5 points as a team. Eddy Ngo (133) captured All-American honors for the Vikings with a 3rd place finish. This included an upset win over Brett Land of West Hills College in the 3rd place match. Eddy was 3-1 for the weekend, which included wins over Rolando Velasco of Modesto College, and a 15-0 tech. fall over Santa Ana’s Cesar Renteria. Eddy ends his season with a 22-8 record, and 4 tournament placings. One of the surprises of the weekend was Lucas Duckwall (184). Lucas, who placed 6th at the Northern California Regionals, was able to pull off two huge upsets on day one. Duckwall started the day off with an 11-6 victory over Mike Salcido of East Los Angeles College. Then came one of the most shocking upsets of the tournament. Lucas beat heavily favorite Derek Rottenberg of Shasta College 6-4 in the Quarterfinals. Rottenberg was the Northern California Champion and Most Outstanding Wrestler the week before at the regionals. Lucas ended his sucessful state tournament with a 9-6 win over Mike Righi of Fresno City in the 5th place match.
Aris Harutuyan (149), who was notified 2 days before the state tournament that he would be competing, put behind a poor regional tournament with an excellent 5th place finish. Aris had revenge on his mind as he beat 3 wrestlers who had defeated him the week before at the regionals. This included a 7-1 win over Buddy Shaw of Modesto College, a 6-2 win over Kyle Lew of Santa Rosa, and in the 5th place match, a 4-0 win over Jimmy Anderson of Skyline College. Mark Bertron (157) finished in 7th place with a 3-2 record for the weekend. Mark secured a state medal with a 17-0 victory over Joe Solis of Mt. San Antonio College. In the 7th place match Mark defeated Sean Barbor of Santa Ana with a 16-0 technical fall. Fernando Munoz (125) was the other state placer with an 8th place finish. His 8-5 win over Rick Bernal of Rio Hondo College guranteed him a state medal.
