Wrestling 101
Wrestling - contest or athletic sport in which two opponents grapple and try to pin each others shoulders to the ground.
MATCH BASICS
- Periods - Each match has three periods lasting two minutes, for a total of six minutes
- Overtime - When both contestants are tied at the end of the three regular periods. An extra period (1 minute) will be wrestled in which the first opponent to score points will result in the winner.
- Double Overtime - If no winner is declared by the end of the 1- minute overtime period, a 30 second tiebreak will be wrestled. The wrestler who has the choice (whomever scored the first point in the match) may select top (offensive) or bottom (defensive) postion. The wrestler who scores the first point(s) will be declared the winner.
If no scoring occurs in 30 seconds the top (offensive) wrestler will be declared the winner.
POSITIONS
- Neutral/Standing - When neither wrestler has control
- Referee’s Position Top - When the wrestler chooses to start from the top (offensive) position
- Referee’s Position Bottom - When the wrestler chooses to start from the top (defensive) position
MATCH SCORING
- Take Down (2 points) - From a neutral position, a wrestler gains control over his opponent down on the mat while the supporting points of either wrestler are inbounds.
- Reversal (2 points) - When the defensive wrestler (wrestler in the bottom position) comes from underneath and gains control of his opponent, either on the mat or in rear-standing postion, while the supporting points of either wrestler are inbounds.
- Near Fall (2/3 points) - When the offensive wrestler has control of his opponent in a pinning combination for a minimum of two seconds, meeting certain criteria.
- Near Fall Criteria: Exposing any part of both shoulders or both scapulae of the defensive wrestler (wrestler in the down position) are help within 4 inches of the mat or less; or when one shoulder/scapulae of the defensive wrestler is touching the mat and the other shoulder/scapulae is help at an angle of 45 degrees or less with the mat.
- Escape (1 point) - When the defensive wrestler (wrestler in the bottom position) gains a neutral position and his opponent has lost control, while the supporting points of either wrestler are inbounds.
- Stalling (1 point/2 points) - When one wrestler has been warned twice for being overly defensive.

1st warning 0 - points
2nd warning 1- point
3rd warning 1 - points
4th warning 2 - points
5th warning Disqualified
DUAL MEET SCORING
- Decision (3 points) - Winning by 7 points or less
- Major Decision (4 points) - Winning by 8 - 14 points
- Technical Fall (5 points) - Winning by 15 points
- Pin/Fall (6 points) - Occurs when any part of both shoulders/scapulas of either wrestler are in contact with the mat for two seconds.
Note: The two seconds (one-thousand-one) shall be a silent count by the referee and shall start only after being in a position to observe. The shoulders/scapulas must held in continuous contact with the mat inbounds.
